Ricci Levy of Woodhull Freedom Foundation is this Week’s Guest on Adult Site Broker Talk.
Ricci has been engaged in sexual freedom activism for several decades.
In 2003, she helped found the Woodhull Freedom Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit human rights organization dedicated to defending the personal autonomy of all individuals.
As the Executive Director, then President and CEO, Ricci has led Woodhull for more than twenty years.
Speaking at conferences and giving testimony around the nation, Ricci frequently frames divisive topics in a way that encourages constructive debate and strengthens relationships.
Ricci is a trailblazer when it comes to putting human rights issues into the spotlight, whether it’s about censorship, the shackling of detained women in labor, the decriminalization of sex work, or the right to family and reproductive justice.
The Foundation has long worked for sexual freedom on behalf of all people, arguing that it is an essential human right that deserves equal status with other fought-for freedoms, such as the right to family, privacy, and freedom of expression.
Woodhull collaborates with allies who represent specific identities, communities, and issues, and she also acts as a general advocate for sexual rights, whether she is addressing students about the validity of all consenting families or successfully urging Congress to remove condoms as proof of prostitution.
The Woodhull Freedom Foundation fights for reforms in various areas that share a commonality: they undermine or outright reject our inherent human right to sexual liberty. Domestic partner benefits were originally in jeopardy of being left out of the definition of same-sex marriage, but Woodhull played a crucial role in getting them included.
They were instrumental in getting the “Prostitution Free Zones” in Washington, DC, shut down because they violated people’s legally protected rights, and they spoke out and fought for an end to the practice of shackling pregnant inmates in Florida prisons.
The legislation governing sexting between minors was also changed because of Woodhull’s lobbying efforts.
The Woodhull Freedom Foundation is leading the charge at the crossroads of sexual and human rights. It demands that the US uphold all human rights, including those pertaining to sexual freedom, instead of imposing restrictions on them. The organization also presses for greater responsibility and action by lawmakers, judges, and corporations.
Woodhull, the lead plaintiff in Woodhull Freedom Foundation v. the United States, filed the sole federal challenge to the lethal FOSTA unlawful legislation.
